Week 13

Mother:

Welcome to the second trimester! This is usually the time when mothers feel their best. They are "over" the joys of early pregnancy and have more energy. They are also beginning to feel pregnant.
Some people have delayed spreading the good news until this point. If you are one of these people enjoy telling now, and think of some creative ways to do it. This is also a time when fathers and other family members start becoming more involved as the pregnancy becomes more real for them. Encourage them to participate in your pregnancy to the extent that you feel comfortable with.
Your appointments will now consist of:

# Blood Pressure
# Weight
# Fundal Height (Growth of the Uterus)
# Baby's Heart Tones
# Urine

Baby:

There are a lot of things going on this week! All twenty teeth have formed and are waiting (Teething is yet to come!). Your baby approximately weighs in at 1 ounce (28.3 grams). Consider that the placenta weighs about an ounce now as well.
Your baby's intestines are migrating from the umbilical cord into his or her abdomen. The villi are also forming in the intestines, these help in peristaltic movements and digestion. The pancreas of your little one is even secreting insulin!

Mummy went for her check-up today.

I was sleeping but somehow got irritated when I was hit by some waves (ultrasound). Aunty Wee Chee said I am growing well, I measure 6.5cm. She also measured the skin behind my neck and looked for my nasal bridge and said "good, no signs of down syndrome." Umm... I wonder what is that?

Mummy's weight : 57.6kg (put on 0.6kg)

Mummy also made partial payment for the delivery package today, she opted for C-Section. Looks like she dowan me to make my entrance to the world at my own timing, but will see the fengshui master for a good date.

Fetal Development:
Third MonthBy this point, nearly all of the organs and structures of the fetus are formed. They will continue to grow and develop until delivery. Fingers and toes have separated and hair and nails begin to grow. The genitals begin to take on their gender characteristics. Amniotic fluid begins to accumulate as the baby's kidneys begin to produce and excrete urine. The muscles in the intestinal walls begin to practice peristalsis - contractions within the intestines that digest food.

Maternal Changes:
Around this week, your uterus will shift up and forward as it grows. The good news is it won't be pressing on your bladder so much and those bathroom visits will get less frequent. Enjoy this while you can because by the third trimester, the uterus will grow large enough to sit on your bladder once again.

Morning sickness is usually getting better by this time, and you may be less tired. Headaches and light-headedness are common now thanks to the increased blood volume but be sure to discuss these symptoms with your care provider.

FETAL DEVELOPMENT
Starting with this week, the baby is now called a fetus. The most critical part of the baby's development is over. This is a period of rapid growth, and the baby is about an inch or so in length at the beginning of the week and will be about 2 inches by the end of the week. The baby's head is about half its length. The eyelids will fuse shut, and the irises will begin to develop. Sometime during this week or the next week, blood will begin to circulate between the baby and uterus and the placenta starts to function.
MATERNAL CHANGES
Your uterus is the size of a small grapefruit alreay! You may find that your appetite is better as your nausea subsides (not true in the case of my mummy) even though certain smells may bother you.
